For more than 30 years, Wolfgang Laib utilized pollen to express the purity and philosophical complexity of this intrinsic material in his artworks. "Pollen from Hazelnut" at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) is Wolfgang Laib's largest pollen installation to date. ARTINFO spoke to Laib at the museum's Marron Atrium and discussed about the symbolic nature of his work and its relationship with humanity.
What inspires me most about Wolf gang, is his desire for solitude and quietatude throughout his work.
One of the other notable qualities of his work is that he has repeated a processor over 30 years and unlike other artists who fear, “remaining the same”, he finds maintaining the tradition of his work and process a non negotiable, in a world where everything has to change every second. His process remains the same, he collects the same pollen from the same trees to present the same piece of work.
His message provokes one to find art and nobleness in the art of ritual and tradition.
”Most art is created only for now, what a waste, I think art is about transcending time, it should string throughout history, and the future.”
